Sunshine vitamin and oily fish linked to ADHD spectrum behaviours

The natural therapy advice for helping those with ADHD and other impulsive behaviour disorders such as bipolar and schizophrenia has long been centred on optimising levels of vitamin D and increasing intake of omega-3 essential fats found in oily fish and nuts and seeds. A new paper from experts in the US has recently suggested a clear theory of why this approach is so beneficial, namely that both these nutrients support serotonin in the brain. The authors highlight optimal vitamin D and omega-3 fats are both essential for making brain serotonin, the chemical responsible for maintaining mood balance. They suggest low vitamin D and omega-3 fats coupled with genetic factors during key stages of development may lead to disrupted serotonin production and function, such that disorders like ADHD can result. So a daily dose of the sun, to up vitamin D levels followed by a tasty fish dinner, may be a great way to help improve daily symptoms.
