Children with asthma highly likely to have peanut allergy but don’t know it…

A new US study has reported interesting findings about the potential association between childhood asthma and peanut allergies. The researchers based in Ohio, examined the medical records of 1,517 children admitted to a children’s hospital with asthma attacks. They found that 11 per cent had a documented peanut allergy and 44 per cent underwent testing for peanut antibodies with a fifth of those children testing positive for a peanut sensitivity. The team concluded that for uncontrolled asthma in children particularly for symptoms such as wheezing and coughing, peanut allergy testing should be more widely undertaken even when a sensitivity is not suspected as the two conditions appear to be so closely linked.
