Safety of energy drinks questioned

A new report published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health has added urgency to the concerns many health professionals have over regular energy drink consumption, especially for young people. The review, co-written by an official of the World Health Organization, states that the consumption of energy drink by young people, especially with alcohol, presents a significant public health concern requiring further research and potential regulation. Concerns centre on the health effects of regular high intakes of caffeine contained in these drinks, which has been linked in numerous studies to seizures, caffeine overdosing, addiction, increased risk-taking behaviour and sudden cardiac arrest. Furthermore, the authors note that there is little or no regulation of the drinks to children, despite the long-term health risks potentially being similar to tobacco and alcohol.
