New antioxidant system discovered
It is fairly widely known within health cycles that we need to have good sources of antioxidants in our diet for protecting cells within the body from the damage that can lead to cancers, premature ageing and many inflammatory diseases. Antioxidants are generally known to be vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables for example vitamins A, E and C and selenium. However scientists have now discovered an additional antioxidant system in the body that is powered by a component found in protein, namely the amino acid methionine. The team believe this system using methionine is able to protect the liver when other antioxidant systems are compromised in some way. Good sources of methionine include eggs, meat, fish, sesame seeds, nuts and cereal grains.
