Coffee may be protective for breast cancer

Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have published new evidence that women who drink at least two cups of coffee a day half their risk of breast cancer tumours reoccurring. The team used lifestyle information and clinical data from over 1000 breast cancer patients of whom 500 were being treated with tamoxifen. The results showed that at diagnosis those who regularly drank coffee had smaller tumours and a lower proportion of hormone dependent tumours than non-coffee drinkers. It appears the breast cancer cells are inhibited by the presence of caffeine. The effects are particularly strong for those taking tamoxifen with the caffeine appearing to enhance the drug’s effects.
