We reveal the vital nutrients to support men’s health…
According to the Men’s Health Forum men are less likely to lead a healthy lifestyle, they are more likely to smoke, drink excessively and be overweight or obese. Statistics show that men die younger than women, have an increased risk of developing conditions such as cancer and are more likely to die from alcohol-related problems. With this in mind, let’s take a look at the specific health concerns that men face, and the vitamins and minerals that will benefit their health.
Heart Disease
Heart disease is still the leading cause of death in men, particularly over the age of 50. Men are also more likely to have a heart attack, heart failure or a stroke than women. To help keep your heart healthy you should increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids, CoEnzyme Q10, vitamin D and magnesium, they all contribute to supporting a healthy cardiovascular system.
“The omega-3 fatty acids from fish have been well researched and are well known to be supportive of good cardiovascular health from hypertension through to atherosclerosis and chronic heart failure,” explains Kelly Rose, nutritional therapist for Higher Nature.
Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids lower the risk of arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats), and decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque and lower blood pressure.
CoEnzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is beneficial for the heart due to its ability to improve energy production in cells, inhibit blood clot formation, and act as an antioxidant. In one study people who had just suffered from a heart attack were given daily CoQ10 supplements, and the results revealed that they were significantly less likely to experience chest pains and subsequent heart attacks.
Studies have revealed that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of heart disease and is linked to high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. Research has linked magnesium deficiency to high blood pressure. Also, by increasing your intake of magnesium you may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and adults with type 2 diabetes are two to four times more likely to have diabetes or a stroke.
Prostate Health
The prostate can be a troublesome gland as men age and prostate disorders include prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. BPH, a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, can lead to lower urinary tract symptoms such as sexual difficulties, bladder discomfort and difficulty passing urine. To help keep your prostate healthy, increase your intake of vitamin C and lycopene.
Vitamin C helps to ease benign prostate hyperplasia symptoms by reducing swelling and promoting urination. Lycopene, found in tomatoes, helps to absorb the damaging free radicals that can harm our cells. Research also suggests that lycopene helps to lower the risk of prostate cancer. In 1995, Dr. Edward Giovannucci conducted a study which found that out of the 48,000 men surveyed; those who ate ten or more servings of tomatoes a week reduced their risk of prostate cancer by 35% and their risk of aggressive prostate tumours by almost 50%.
“Citrus fruits can help in alleviating symptoms and a high intake of carotenoids and vitamin C may reduce the risk of developing lower urinary tract symptoms. Carotenoids such as lycopene, have been found to be of use in BPH and prostate health in general,” said Rose.
Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction, more commonly known as impotence, occurs in most men at some point, and can occur at any age. The essential amino acid L-arginine has been found to be particularly helpful with erectile dysfunction. It helps by promoting the formation of nitric oxide, which helps to dilate the blood vessels.
Studies have revealed that L-arginine helps to restore erectile quality and increase sexual satisfaction by boosting nitric oxide bioactivity and improving blood flow to the penis.
“The key to avoiding health issues and achieving optimal health is to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and to be aware that you have to look after the only body that you have!” adds Rose.
