Yoga can counteract chronic pain effects

Anyone who suffers from chronic pain will tell you how debilitating it can be to all aspects of their lives. But new research into the powers of yoga may offer new hope. Researchers speaking at the American Pain Society’s annual meeting have presented interesting new evidence into the healing effects of the ancient practice of yoga. Using advanced brain imaging techniques, chronic pain sufferers have been shown to have altered brains from healthy control subjects such as reduced grey matter. This has been shown to be strongly associated with depression, poor memory, emotional problems and reduced cognitive functioning. This latest research has demonstrated that regular yoga is able to prevent or even reverse these changes from occurring. In particular practicing regular yoga has been shown to induce positive changes to the amount of insula grey matter which is also known to correlate highly with pain tolerance offering benefits in both quality of life and pain threshold levels.
